Working closely with the project design team we have modified and produced parts for this new engine, this includes the cab and running boards. It will become the new National Memorial Engine.
The project to build a new locomotive named ‘The Unknown Warrior’ was launched in 2008 and is a unique concept as there are no original ‘Patriot’ class locomotives preserved. Through fundraising the aim is to complete the engine build and run it on the mainline as a permanent memorial to all fallen servicemen and women.
One of the major hurdles of this project was to find equivalent spec materials. All the original parts were made in imperial sizes and materials, also using now outdated manufacturing methods. The LMS team want all parts to be as close to the originals as possible. Therefore, we had to be creative in finding ways to make the new laser cut and CNC formed parts look like they belonged in the 1920’s.
