The car designer and builder Paul Bacon has unveiled his latest creation Automatron. This is not your ordinary custom vehicle, being built from the ground up with custom parts. Whilst we can’t take any of the credit for the creative design work on the car, we were pleased to work with Paul in cutting the laser profiles he required.
As you can imagine there is a lot of prototype and development work in a design like this, we used the CAD drawings supplied and converted them into a laser cutting format whilst also adding features that made the following fabrication easier. The wheel assemblies are made from a base of 10 mm mild steel with 6 mm mild steel being used for the gussets and detailing work. The chassis is built up from laser cut flat profiles and built up into what you can see in the pictures. Even the door mechanisms started as mild steel profiles which were then fabricated and painstakingly polished to give a brilliant finish.
